Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Is It Time for Your Mammogram?
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a good reminder to check in on your breast health. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian women, and finding it early gives the best chance of successful treatment.
Free screening mammograms
BreastScreen NSW offers free mammograms every two years. Women aged 50 to 74 are invited to screen, and women aged 40 and over are also eligible. You don't need a referral from your GP. To book, call 13 20 50.
Screening mammograms are for women without symptoms. If you notice a change, don't wait for your next screen. Book in to see your GP.
Know your normal
See your GP if you notice:
- a new lump or lumpiness
- changes to the nipple, such as discharge, crusting or a nipple that turns inwards
- skin changes, such as redness or dimpling
- pain that doesn't go away
Men can also develop breast cancer, so the same advice applies to them.
Family history?
If close relatives have had breast or ovarian cancer, talk to your GP. They can discuss whether you need a different screening plan.
Our female and male GPs are available 7 days. Book online via HotDoc or call (02) 4622 1440.
